FFT WotL New Scenes
New Scenes, Battles, and Events
This section is a compilation of all the new write-ups for the new scenes and battles within War of the Lions. This includes new scenes that will need to be inserted before existing walkthrough chapters and new battles that will need to be inserted entirely.
Scene: Wiegraf at Lenalian Plateau
After the Golgollada Gallows, when you go to the Balias Swale, you'll be taken to a scene with Wiegraf in the Lenalian Plateau. He is beside a sword-marked gravestone for Miluda, swearing vengeance on her murderers. A man named Loffrey appears, startling Wiegraf, but he explains that he sought Wiegraf to make a proposition, as they desire the same thing - to rebuild Ivalice in such a way that it does not favor the nobility. The scene shoots skyward without explicit resolution, but the intent is clear - this is the beginning of Wiegraf's allegiance with the Temple Knights.
Battle: Zeirchele Falls before Cuchulainn
New battle 1:
Zeirchele Falls (Right before Cuchulainn)
New to War of the Lions is a Ramza-less battle featuring Delita and Ovelia back at Zeirchele Falls, after Cardinal Delacroix tasks Delita with bringing Ovelia to Goltanna in Zeltennia. Ovelia and Delita speak for awhile regarding Ovelia's status as a Princess, but when she attempts to cross the bridge, a stray arrow flies in front of her, narrowly missing. A few members of the Northern Sky have arrived, with orders to kill on sight. The battle begins.
Enemies: Knight x1, Archer x1, Wizard x1
Guest Characters: Ovelia (Princess)
Geomancy Available: Tremor, Torrent, Tanglevine, Wind Slash
Objective: Protect Ovelia
Music: Apoplexy (extended)
For the first time in the game, you actually get to control Delita in battle! He's all you really get, though, as Ovelia is along as a guest once more; fortunately, her AI is smart enough to do the one thing you need her to do anyway - Aegis herself and get out of the way. Feel free to be very brazen in this fight - Delita is much more powerful than the enemies in the fight, despite being outnumbered. None of them will pose enough threat to Delita, and if you're lucky, they'll set themselves in a formation where you can hit more than one at a time with Hallowed Bolt or Divine Ruination. It won't take more than two hits to take out any of the enemies and they'll be lucky to get more than a couple hits out in the entirety of the battle.
Battle: Zeklaus Desert after Orbonne, Chapter 3
New battle 2:
Zeklaus Desert (After events at Orbonne, chapter 3)
Also new to the War of the Lions translation is a forced battle in the Zeklaus Desert as you attempt to make your way to Riovanes Castle in your pursuit of Alma. You'll be treated to a new cutscene in which a mysterious character is being pursued by three Behemoths in a valley. Ramza takes up chase in attempt to help him out. The man gets cornered against a wall, and everything seems out of reach for him, when all of a sudden Ramza catches up, initiating a battle in which the reward is one of two new guest characters - Luso.
Enemies: Behemoth x3, King Behemoth x2, Dark Behemoth x1
Guest Characters: Luso (Game Hunter)
Geomancy Available: Sandstorm, Tremor,
Objective: Protect Luso
Music: A Chapel
This battle can be pretty tough, and it isn't helped out by Luso's tendency to thrust himself in the middle of all six of the Behemoths from the first turn on. Make sure that you have a character with the ability to heal - Item secondary with at least Hi-Potion if not X-Potion is recommended, since whitemagic will likely get absorbed by some of the Behemoths as well. It's also recommended to bring along an Orator as you won't have the opportunity to Entice a Behemoth to your party for quite some time. Not only will this be good for Poaching opportunities, but it is a definite way to help even the battle a little bit.
The three regular Behemoths probably won't pose too much of a threat, and the King Behemoths aren't that much more dangerous - it's the Dark Behemoth that is particularly scary here. If you have a Wizard with Flare, it's definitely worth it to attempt to take it out in one shot from a good range. Jobs that can hit multiple enemies at once indiscriminately like Summoner and Samurai are also highly helpful since the Behemoths will cluster around any of your party members that stick themselves out in the open. Fortunately you do get a full party of five + Luso, so you're not outnumbered, but you have to remember that Luso's death results in a Game Over here.
Once the battle is won, Luso and Ramza formally introduce themselves after battle and you have the opportunity to bring him along as a full-time character. Don't miss this chance, as he's got the same skillset as Squire Ramza, but with an auto-Poach innate when he defeats enemies, which is extremely helpful.
Battle: Zeltennia Castle - Chapel Ruins, after Yaridow
New battle 3:
Zeltennia Castle - Chapel Ruins (After events at Yaridow, Chapter 3)
Immediately after trying to leave the city following the battle at Yaridow, you'll fade into a cutscene with Ovelia praying at the Chapel Ruins in Zeltennia. Delita enters and interrupts her, but before they can discuss much, he runs in front of her, blocking a projectile clearly meant to assassinate her. Delita calls out the assassins as Pawns of Larg and Dycedarg, and two ninjas appear and the battle begins.
Enemies: Ninja x2
Guest Characters: Ovelia (Princess)
Geomancy Available:
Objective: Protect Ovelia
Music: Trisection
As a battle, this is a complete joke. It would be a much greater challenge to attempt to lose this battle rather than win it. You're only up against two Ninjas, and similar to the previous battle at Zeirchele Falls, you control Delita with Ovelia as your guest. Neither Ninja poses any significant threat to either of your characters, whether Ovelia has buffed them or not. Simply use Northswain's Strike against each Ninja and the battle is over as simply as that.
Despite the ease of defeat, Delita is clearly hurt after the battle and Ovelia expresses worry. The battle itself is meant more as a driver of the plot between the two characters than any sort of challenge.
Scene: Zeltennia after Bervenia
When you attempt to leave Bervenia, you'll be taken to the Zeltennia Castle Keep to see Delita reminiscing about Tietra while clutching something shiny in his hand. He leaves the room and heads outside, where Ovelia is once again trying to whistle through a blade of grass. Delita shows her the proper way of doing it, then shows her Tietra's pendant and talks about his family and the circumstances of her death. He explains that he will never let Tietra's fate befall Ovelia and will protect her from anyone who tries to use her.
Battle: Dorter Slums (Sidequest)
You can move on to Finath River, but once you've completed the events with Meliadoul at Bervenia Free City, you can embark on a sidequest to gain another NPC character, Balthier. To begin the quest, head back to Goland Coal City and enter the tavern. In the rumors section, you should see an entry titled "Rash of Thefts." Check it out, then exit the tavern and head to tavern at Dorter. Check the rumors list here as well, checking specifically the entry titled "A Call for Guards." Exit back to the world map, attempt to leave the city, and you're suddenly preparing for a battle!
New battle 4:
Dorter Slums
Before the battle begins, you're treated to a beautiful new cutscene as Ramza falls into a trap sprung for whoever is trying to steal from the people mentioned in the rumors at the taverns. Even though the opponents realize that Ramza isn't the thief they're looking for, they recognize him as a heretic and still attempt to capture him. Balthier shows up with his gun, wounding one of the attackers, and the enemies decide to attempt to capture both of them.
Enemies: Archer x3, Thief x1, Monk x1, White Mage x1
Guest Characters: Balthier (Sky Pirate)
Geomancy Available:
Objective: Defeat all enemies!
Music: Back Fire
Balthier proposes an alliance with your group, but you're still outnumbered in the fight. Fortunately, the enemies aren't really that complicated. The Monk opponent knows most of his related skills, and can do some damage with Aurablast and Shockwave, but otherwise your normal tactics should work fine in this battle. Balthier is exceptionally strong with high speed and a powerful gun and will likely take out multiple enemies on his own. One of the enemy Archers is also equipped with the Gastrophetes, which is the best crossbow in the game. If you have any thought of using Archers, it's worth attempting to steal it before finishing the battle. No unit is particularly dangerous past the Monk or the Thief (Steal Heart can be a pain), so once you've taken them down, you shouldn't have an issue with the rest.
After the battle, Ramza and Balthier introduce themselves. Ramza warns Balthier not to continue his search for the Cache of Glabados, as it is much too dangerous. Balthier recognizes the danger, and as Ramza knows the path, he insists upon joining the group and insults Ramza in the process. Ramza walks out of the area altogether, but Balthier persists, and you're given the option to recruit him. Do so.
Battle: Limberry Castle Inner Court, before Zalera
New battle 5:
Limberry Castle Inner Court
As Ramza makes his way toward the basement to find Alma, an unseen voice calls out to him, telling him that he won't make it all the way as long as he's in the way. Ramza insists that the person reveal himself, and Argath appears, provoking him in his typical arrogant fashion. It's clear he's been revived through some sinister means, revealed by both his appearance and taunts, and summons five Ultima Demons to take out Ramza and the party that appears behind him.
Enemies: Argath (Deathknight), Ultima Demon x5
Guest Characters: None
Geomancy Available: Will-o'wisp, Sinkhole, Tanglevine, Wind Slash
Objective: Defeat Argath!
Music: Battle on the Bridge
Speed will be your best friend in this battle, as taking out the five Ultima Demons will be a big challenge unless your team is overleveled compared to these enemies. Argath should get a turn fairly early and will approach the party to use some of Gaffgarion's skillset. If you want to take out the Ultima Demons, move with your entire team as a whole and start with the lone demon atop the wall where Argath began. This will keep you mostly out of range of the others. The demons are slow in speed and you should be able to take out that one before it gets a turn. Staying out of the range of the demons is key, so characters with guns - either the Ras Algethi from Balthier or the Glacial Gun from Barach - will be a big help here. Move your way around the perimeter of the map to keep out of range of all the demons at once.
If you're a lower level and don't want to deal with the demons, focus entirely on Argath. He has very high defense and will take limited damage from your attacks, but powerful characters like Orlandeau or Agrias will deal a lot of damage to him. Jumping on him, especially if you're using the Javelin 2 from the optional Nelveska Temple battle, will also deal a lot of damage, as will a strong Samurai using the Muramasa or a Ninja attacking from behind. You shouldn't have too much trouble here if you just unload your most powerful abilities on him right away.
After the battle, Argath fades away after calling out for his mother.
Battle: Dorter, between Limberry and Igros
New battle 6:
Dorter
After leaving Limberry Castle without Alma, you'll be making your way toward Igros Castle. If you take a route through Dorter, though, you'll be ambushed and taken to a battle screen.
As Ramza walks through Dorter, a man calls out to him from the rooftops. This is Cletienne, one of the Temple Knights working with Folmarv. As Ramza approaches him, he's suddenly frozen by a trap and unable to move. As Cletienne prepares to kill Ramza in his disabled state, his spell is suddenly interrupted by a massive projectile hitting him and the spell on Ramza fades. Meliadoul enters and Cletienne calls her a traitor, but she turns the claim right back at him as the Templarate was ultimately responsible for her brother's death. Cletienne's cronies enter, and the battle begins.
Enemies: Cletienne (Sorcerer), Time Mage x2, Summoner x2, Black Mage x1
Guest Characters: Meliadoul (Divine Knight)
Geomancy Available: Wind Blast, Contortion, Tanglevine
Objective: Defeat Cletienne!
Music: Apoplexy 2
You only have four slots, but fortunately Meliadoul comes along and is out for blood. Let her do her own thing, as she's a guest and you really have no choice. The map is fairly crowded at the top, so attacks with a large area of effect are really handy - Samurais with high-level swords and summoners of your own will be incredibly handy. The enemy characters are at a fairly low level, so strong special characters like Orlandeau and Agrias will overpower them very easily. Otherwise, systematically work your way through the enemies with what you have until you get to Cletienne. He may start the battle with strong magic like Holy, but if you take out his teammates, he will get distracted trying to revive them. You shouldn't be overwhelmed by this battle as long as you actively assault the enemies and don't hold back.
Keep in mind that Meliadoul must stay alive in this battle or you lose, but it's unlikely that she will take much damage in the fight at all. After you win, Cletienne will teleport away after mocking Meliadoul, who is left wondering if her father is indeed a Lucavi.
Event: Agrias' Birthday
Requirement: Mustadio, Agrias, Alicia, and Lavian must be in the party roster. You must also have at least 500,000 gil in your war funds, though the scene will only cost 50,000. You also must enter a town on 1 Cancer. Not sure yet which towns are applicable, as Dorter did not work but Lesalia did.
SCENE: Tavern, Agrias sitting alone. Ramza and Mustadio enter. Mustadio: Hmm... Ramza: Well? Do you intend to give it to her or not? Mustadio: Give...what? To whom? I've...I've no idea what you -- Ramza: Mustadio! Mustadio: All right, all right... [Mustadio walks away from Ramza and approaches Agrias.] Mustadio: Ah, Agrias! I, ah, I hope this is n-not...not a bad time. Agrias: Hmm? Is something the matter? Mustadio: N-no, it's just, I -- here! [Mustadio pulls a present out of his shirt and hands it to her.] Agrias: What's this? Mustadio: It's a, ah...um -- a present! Mustadio: I heard today was your birthday, so I, well... Agrias: Today -is- my birthday, isn't it? I'd near forgotten. Who told you? Lavian? Alicia? Those two cannot still their tongues, can they? Mustadio: Um... Anyway, I, ah, wanted to...to give you this. It isn't much. Agrias: May I open it? Mustadio: Ah, yes, of course! [Agrias opens the gift.] Agrias: Lip rouge? Mustadio: Yes. Y-you're always busy fighting, and...and... Well, I know you've probably small time for such womanly things, but...I thought m-mayhap you might like to have that. Agrias: I've small time, yes, but I chose this life for myself. It's not as though I regret it. Still, there are times... Are you sure it's all right for me to have this? Mustadio: Of course! Why do you ask? Agrias: It cost a goodly amount, did it not? Surely a gift like this is wasted on a knight such as I? Mustadio: No, not at all! Please, accept it! Agrias: Very well, then. [Agrias applies the rouge.] Mustadio: Oh! Agrias: Well? Mustadio: ... Agrias: Do I look odd? Mustadio: Wh-what? N-no! You look wonderful! Truly...truly so! Agrias: Thank you, Mustadio. I will treasure it, as I do our friendship.
Scene: Agrias at Zeltennia
Once you've completed the events at Mullonde, entering Zeltennia with Agrias still in your party will trigger an event with Agrias and Ovelia. If Lavian and Alicia are still in your group, they will also show up, but the event will happen even if you have dismissed them. Ovelia asks for Agrias to return to her aid, but Agrias tells her that she will do more good traveling with Ramza against the Temple Knights and the Lucavi. Delita enters and promises Agrias that he will keep Ovelia safe. Agrias then gives Ovelia a knife for protection and takes her leave.
Battle: Brigands' Den, after Mullonde
After seeing the scene at Zeltennia with Agrias and Ovelia, make your way to either Eagrose Castle or Gariland and enter the tavern. Check the Rumors section for a new one titled Disorder in the Order. The rumor mentions a group of defected Knights who have taken the Brigands' Den as their hideout. If you head to the Brigands' Den now, you'll enter a battle.
New battle 7:
Brigands' Den
Enemies: Ninja x1, Squire x2, Knight x2, Monk x1
Guest Characters: Agrias
Geomancy Available: Carve Model, Demon Fire, Hell Ivy, Water Ball
Objective: Defeat All Enemies!
Music: Trisection
The deserters discuss their plans for ransacking a village just as Ramza and company appear at the battlefield. Ramza comes in and announces that this is the end of their debauchery and their options are to surrender or die. They scoff at the ultimatum and demand Agrias as recompense. Agrias gets angry and the battle begins.
You only have four slots, plus Agrias, but she can be kind of annoying in the battle...because there is a lot of good stuff to steal here. You're likely to be quite overleveled for this fight, and as such you should ransack the enemies for their dang good loot. The Ninja is the main one you want to steal from, as he has Sasuke's Blade, one of the two best ninjaswords in the game. Each Squire has a powerful magic-based gun, one with the Glacial and one with the Blaze. You may have a Glacial Gun from the earlier battle against Barich, but the Blaze is a new one for your repertoire. The Knights each have a Gastrophetes, which you could have stolen from Balthier way back when. Finally, the Monk has a Barette and a Ninja Gear, the latter of which gives Auto-Invisible, a pretty fun status to play around with.
Decide what you want to steal, or if you want to steal at all, and then have at it. Agrias can get in the way here, but fortunately, you can KO her without any penalty to the battle objective. This battle isn't terribly difficult if you have some healing options, since the enemies CAN do some damage, but the pecking order should be quite clear. Additionally, the enemies don't crystalize after being KOed, so if you want to leave just a couple alive while you steal, you're more than able to revive the enemies to get their loot afterward. This shouldn't be too difficult.
- Note: This version of the Brigand's Den uses the same map and same treasure layout as the original. The enemy layout is slightly changed. *
Battle: Lionel Castle Gate, after Mullonde
After the events at Mullonde, there are additional battles in the War of the Lions translation dealing with Beowulf and Reis. Head to any tavern and read the rumor titled "Lionel's New Liege Lord." After reading this, make your way to Lionel Castle, saving before entering the dot on the world map. Upon entering, Reis and Beowulf will have a scene in a field overlooking Lionel. They reminisce about their time in their homeland and how a man named Bremondt was responsible for their brandings as heretics. Beowulf leaves to see if he is needed, but before he can get too far, Reis screams in distress. Beowulf returns to her location, but the only person left is a man named Aliste who says that she has been taken to Bremondt. Make sure Beowulf is equipped, as a battle is about to begin.
New battle 8: Lionel Castle Gate
Enemies: Aliste (Templar), Ninja x2, Archer x2, Time Mage x1 Guest Characters: Beowulf Geomancy Available: Wind Slash, Contortion, Tanglevine, Quicksand, Objective: Defeat Aliste! Music: Trisection
You only have four slots here, but that's because Beowulf is coming along as a guest. Unlike some previous battles, Beowulf cannot be KOed or the battle ends. The gate here is open, unlike last time, so you don't have to worry about anybody pushing buttons.
Aliste shares Beowulf's skillset, so you know what you're in for. He starts atop the castle, but seems to target Beowulf exclusively in this battle, particularly with the Disable skill, so don't be surprised if Beowulf doesn't really have anything to do in the battle. If you have a way to heal that status, you can keep Aliste busy for the entire fight, which can be very useful. Otherwise, charge in and take out his henchmen if you like, or attack Aliste when he inevitably teleports right in the thick of things with your entire party. He comes equipped with the Shirahadori skill, which means that you'll have a lot of trouble hitting him with physical attacks, so bring along somebody adept with the Iaido skillset or anything magickal. Once you kill him, he does get back up with just 1 HP remaining, but that's just a small setback. He can take a lot of damage, but he really can't deal it out, so this should be an easy battle.
After the fight, Aliste will reveal that this was some misguided way of getting Beowulf to kill him so he wouldn't die from some sickness. Okay?
- Note: This battle shares the treasure of the original visit, but the battle takes place at sunset. Enemy and Ally positions also change.
Battle: Lionel Castle Oratory, after the Gate
New battle 9: Lionel Castle Oratory
Enemies: Bremondt (Celebrant), Ninja x2, Samurai x2, Mystic x2 Guest Characters: Beowulf Geomancy Available: Contortion, Will-o'-the-Wisp Objective: Defeat Bremondt! Music: Antipyretic
Bremondt is inside of Lionel Castle, clearly freaking out and very agitated. He has an army of women surrounding him, and another Ninja enters to warn him of your group coming in to massacre everyone. Shortly thereafter, your group enters, and the battle begins.
There are a lot of enemies to deal with here, so take it slowly. Bremondt himself is not a huge threat, as he will likely just try to revive anybody that you kill, so your first targets should be the two Ninjas. After that, take out the Samurai who is not equipped with the Masamune, as you're going to want to steal that for yourself. The Mystics shouldn't pose any threat at this state, especially if you have someone around to cure any status that they might impose.
Stealing the Masamune in this battle is the only way to obtain one not in the Deep Dungeon, so definitely corner her and go for the weapon. She's going to be blasting your characters with Samurai skills as she does so, though, so definitely make sure you can heal damage in a range.
Bringing Bremondt to critical status will end the fight.
- Note: Again, this shares the treasure layout of the battle against Cuchulainn, and only the enemy positions change. This map is called "Inside Lionel Castle" in PSX. The lighting looks to match that of the Cuchulainn battle.
Battle: Lionel Castle Oratory 2
New battle 10: Lionel Castle Oratory
Enemies: Bremondt (Dark Dragon) Guest Characters: Beowulf Geomancy Available: Contortion, Will-o'-the-Wisp Objective: Defeat Bremondt! Music: Antipyretic
Similar to the fight against Belias, Bremondt will transform into a monster when he takes enough damage. Here, you are against him in his Dark Dragon form. Contrary to the fight against Belias, this one is pretty much a joke. Though Bremondt is pretty strong, you're only against him in the fight, and he will really only use his Breath attacks that can only hope to deal damage to two of your party members. Surround him and unleash your most powerful attacks, taking note to heal if you get too low from his Breath attacks or any counters. He's got over 3000 HP in this form, so it may take awhile, but he'll never be able to deal enough damage to a strong party to be a real threat.
Once you've killed him, he will turn back into a human and perish. You'll see a scene in which Beowulf rescues Reis. Because everyone pursuing them is now dead, they're finally safe from anyone chasing them. Curiously, you'll be asked to re-invite Beowulf and Reis into your party. There is no more additional content that requires them to come along, but they're still strong and loyal party members, so bring them along.
